As we strive toward a sustainable future, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continue to be a leading light for companies. Not only are the goals fueling new approaches to corporate governance, they are also generating bold ideas and driving innovation. Amid mounting challenges in the worldwide economy, corporations can play a major role in addressing social and environmental issues.
Recently, Bain & Company surveyed 297 global companies of which 81% said sustainability is more important to their business today than it was five years ago and 85% believe that it will be even more important in five years. According to the report, companies can gain significant business advantage by envisioning their future in a truly sustainable economy and crafting objectives to fit that vision. The research findings also suggest that forward-thinking companies should find ways to make sustainability irresistible to consumers, address the root causes of challenges in their value chains and perform on-the-ground work to achieve system changes at scale.
They should expand their view of value creation beyond financial profit to consider the environment and use advanced technology to intensify sustainability efforts.
